International Conference on Algebra 2010

Gadjah Mada University

October 7, 2010 – October 10, 2010

The Conference Committees cordially invite you to participate in the International Conference on Algebra in honor of the 70th birthday of Professor Shum Kar Ping to be held in Yogyakarta, Indonesia on 7-10 October 2010. This conference is organized to celebrate Professor Shum's outstanding accomplishments in the field of Algebra as well as his lifetime contributions not only to the mathematical community and mathematics education in Hong Kong, but also in Southeast Asia and other parts of the world. This is also an occasion to remember the best from the past work and to renew memories and friendships fostered through Professor Shum. The Conference is supported by Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah Mada University, and the Southeast Asian Mathematical Society (SEAMS).

The Conference will take place at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Gadjah-Mada University, Yogyakarta, Indonesia on 7-10 October 2010. Yogyakarta is located in south-central Java.  Yogyakarta (some people call it Jogja, Jogjakarta, or Yogya) – which can be reached in one hour flight from Jakarta – is a city with outstanding historical and cultural heritage. Yogyakarta was the centre of the Mataram Dynasty (1575-1640), and until now the kraton (the sultan's palace) exists in its real functions. Also, Yogyakarta has numerous thousand-year-old temples as inheritances of the great ancient kingdoms, such as the Borobudur Temple established in the ninth century by the dynasty of Syailendra. More than the cultural heritages, Yogyakarta has beautiful natural panorama. The green rice fields cover the suburban areas with a background of the Merapi Mountain. The natural beaches can be easily found to the south of Yogyakarta. An artistic atmosphere is deeply felt in Yogyakarta. Malioboro, as the center of Yogyakarta, is overwhelmed by handicrafts from all around the city. For more information, please visit http://www.yogyes.com/ or http://visitingjogja.com/. The Conference activities will be done in the campus of Gadjah Mada University (http://ugm.ac.id). The Opening Ceremony, Plenary Talks, and the Closing Ceremony will be held at the Main Auditorium of Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The Short Communications will be held at the seminar rooms of the Mathematics Graduate Program Building.
